In this issue of WHOTT Web News we take a brief look at the uniforms of the bus companies, the BTC and NBC and Just the Ticket.

BTC and NBC Divide and Rule? - On three occasions since the second world war depots and vehicles of the Western National company have been transferred to a neighbouring company during exercises to rationalise operations. The first of these was on the 20th May 1950 when the depot at Stroud was handed over to Bristol Tramways & Carriage Company, together with forty nine vehicles. This was part of the general reorganisation of the Bristol company's activities in the Stroud area and also included the Red & White company's depot in that town. In exchange Bristol handed over to Red & White its Coleford depot and vehicles in the Forest of Dean. Western National had a fairly large depot in London Road, Stroud and the vehicles based there and transferred to Bristol Tramways. | Pangs of nostalgia...as Bert looks back - Ensuring that all aspects of transport history are properly recorded, Bert this time reflects on the more human aspect of the bus company, in this case the uniforms worn over the years by the "National" platform staff. He start with the uniforms worn in 1909 by the National Steam Car Company, then to 1925 with the National Omnibus & Transport Company which then leads onto the two new operating names - Western National and Southern National. Just the Ticket - Both tickets illustrated are from Weymouth carrying the same advertisement for Garratt Jones on the reverse. They are for a joint service run by the GWR and LSWR (which became part of SR after the 1922 grouping) in the first case the GWR and SR in the second. Additionally this ticket also carries the name of the printer Williamson. |
