In this issue of WHOTT Web News we take a brief look at the last Bristol manufactured by Bristol Commercial Vehicles, Bygone Haulage Companies and the regular Pangs of Nostalgia.
| Manufacturing History - Last Bristol - The last Bristol chassis to leave the Brislington Works was A686 KDV -. former Devon General and Southern National Olympian 1814. Being the last it was signed by the workforce prior to leaving Bristol Commercial Vehicles. 1814 later saw service in the Isle of Man as MAN 57N. She returned back to the mainland on 19th August 2001 and made her first appearance at the Bristol Vintage Bus Group's Open day. |

Pangs of Nostalgia as Bert Looks Back -
Bert looks back at Bournemouth Bus Stations which opened in 1931 and was used by Hants & Dorset and Royal Blue Express Services. The bus station was on two levels; the upper being used for bus services operated by H&D and the lower level being used by coach services. The bus station was advanced in its construction and layout when built, but on the 25th of July 1976 was devastated by fire with the loss 14 vehicles (12 coaches, 1 minibus and a staff car) and 4 other coaches were damaged. With the bus station now out of use, Bert looks at how a full service was maintained with the help of other operators. In Newsletter 8 he looks at operators and depots in the West Country. Buses were operated by two corporations, Plymouth and Exeter, the Devon General Company in south and east Devon and Western and Southern National based at Exeter with 31 depots stretched across all four counties (and beyond) not to mention the not inconsiderable number of independent operators of which one, Bere Regis & District was arguably the largest in Britain. In addition to Western/Southern National depots they had a large number of outstations. Bert looks at these small outstations and how they provided a link (and parcel service) to the community.Bygone Haulage Companies - There have been many large and small haulage companies operating in the West Country. Many of these companies have now ceased trading.
